Dakota “Bones” Brooks is a determined, independent twelve-year-old with a unique talent of free diving. His search takes place in the beautiful and challenging terrain of Southern Utah’s Castle Gate, Goblin Valley, Canyonlands National Park, and Lake Powell where his free diving skills are put to the test as they assist him in solving the mystery.Bones and The Treasure Map is an adventure set in real places with real family relationships, a main character with a real “superpower”, and a little history about some real outlaws.Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Bones and the Treasure Map" by Kevin Beck.by kandscreeley » 29 Feb 2020, 13:434 out of 4 starsDakota is a simple twelve-year-old who has a not so simple mission in life: He must find the treasure left behind by Butch Cassidy in order to save his grandfather. Papa Dave gave Dakota the treasure map after becoming injured on the quest to locate it himself. Will Dakota be able to decipher the map and find the treasure? Or will he let Papa Dave down?Bones and the Treasure Map is a young adult book written by Kevin Beck. There's no language, little violence, and nothing sexual. Therefore, the book is appropriate for all ages, including being a great story to read aloud as a family. The best young adult books are able to educate while being entertaining. Children and even most teens don't want to read a boring book full of dry facts. They want an adventure. If that adventure just happens to teach them, so be it. I'm proud to say that Bones and the Treasure Map is just such a book. I learned about Butch Cassidy and his gang. I discovered a sport called free diving. I even learned more about landmarks in Utah. I hardly even realized I was learning because I was having so much fun.Dakota narrates the book himself, and it was enjoyable seeing the world through his eyes. A few times he felt older than his twelve years, but, for the most part, Mr. Beck did well with his age. Dakota placed quite a bit of pressure on himself, as kids that age are wont to do. He also tended to oversimplify life. He thought if he could just get enough money, he could take care of Papa Dave; however, real life isn't usually that cut and dry.The author was descriptive enough in the writing that I could picture locations and events with ease. Wordiness wasn't an issue, but rather there was just the right balance between description and action to keep a young mind (or an old one for that matter) captivated. The book was also well-edited. In fact, I found only one error throughout the whole story. All in all, I have no complaints about Bones and the Treasure Map. Therefore, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. It's the perfect length for middle school, but the story is fascinating enough for high schoolers or even adults. Anyone who likes a good treasure hunt or even those that enjoy survival stories would appreciate this book. It would even make a great read aloud story for a whole family. I can't wait to see what else the author produces.
